Berlin – A Metropolis of Creativity and Artistic Expression
Few cities attract as many people seeking to express their creativity, build connections, expand their networks, or feel understood by society as Berlin. For many artists, the city marks the beginning of a promising artistic career. The city’s growth is booming, and more and more young people are either making Berlin their home or feeling at home there while seeking their place in the creative scene. But what is it like to live as a young artist in Berlin? What challenges arise, and how do they navigate their art-filled daily lives in such a diverse city?
Sirp (24) & Kayn (22) are two brothers from the Pankow district, born and raised in a creative family in Berlin. They learned to play instruments at an early age, which helped them quickly develop a deep understanding of music. Since 2015, they have been writing their own hip-hop songs and regularly releasing them on YouTube and popular streaming platforms. Today, they have a studio at our partner “ARTtraktiv” in Berlin Marzahn, where they work on new songs and their careers almost daily.
“It’s amazing to have a private space where we can work undisturbed and let our creativity flow. We are very happy with the studio; I appreciate it every day. I think I speak for almost every young artist in Berlin when I say that having a studio space is not a given, considering how many people in the city are searching for one,” says 22-year-old Kayn.
The brothers juggle their lives between jobs, studies, and music. Their songs often reference Berlin, particularly their district, as reflected in their 2023 song “Haus in Pankow”. The song speaks of a love-hate relationship, opposites, and both the beautiful and difficult sides of Berlin. “I feel like a stranger here, yet strangely at home,” they sing, encapsulating their emotions well. “We grew up here, and it’s home, but we often feel misunderstood. If you’ve spent your entire life in Berlin without ever leaving for the Mediterranean, you start longing for something new, beyond this city. Still, we would probably always come back – it’s tough with Berlin, but it’s impossible without it,” says the older brother.

A City Full of Artists – But Not Always a Path to Success
Berlin’s young cultural scene is constantly reinventing itself, driven by innovation and digital reach. Platforms like Spotify allow for short-term success through algorithms, but for many, the big breakthrough remains elusive.
Despite the presence of three major record labels in Berlin, only a few artists manage to establish long-term success. Short-term contracts generate quick hype, but rarely provide sustainable careers. Thus, while Berlin remains a hotbed for talent, the road to true success is rockier than it might seem.
Despite Challenges, Berlin Inspires
While young artists in Berlin face significant hurdles, there are also undeniable advantages to living in the city. The nightlife scene provides a space for artists to connect, meet new people, and establish crucial networks – a fundamental necessity, much like in the business world. Berlin’s energy is infectious; creativity is in the air, fueling an urge to create and contribute to the city’s vibrant cultural landscape. The desire to inspire others with one’s art is an ever-present force.
Berlin has always been, and will always be, a city for artists – it’s in its DNA.
