How the Berlin HipHop Akademie uses urban culture to create spaces for learning, community and belonging beyond the classroom
HipHop has never been just about music, dance or performance. For generations of young people, it has been a space to experiment, to find their voice and, perhaps most importantly, to discover that their perspective matters. That is exactly where the Berlin HipHop Akademie begins.
Since 2023, the Akademie has been working with youth centres across Berlin, creating spaces where young people can explore rap, music and dance outside the traditional classroom. But developing artistic skills is only part of the story. At its core, the work is about confidence. Expression. Community. And the feeling of belonging somewhere. One of the people driving that work is Drob Dynamic.
For him, the importance of these spaces is deeply personal. Growing up around the Naunynritze youth centre in Kreuzberg, he experienced first hand what access to culture and community can mean. At just 18, he led his first workshop. Today, he brings together his own practice as an artist with his work as a social worker and HipHop educator.
“HipHop creates something that schools, by their very structure, often struggle to provide: a space young people choose to enter. They come because they want to, not because they have to.”

Each One Teach One
There is one principle that runs through Drob’s work: Each One Teach One. It is one of HipHop culture’s most powerful traditions. Knowledge, history, skills and values are passed from one generation to the next. Those who were once given an opportunity create opportunities for others. And the impact is tangible.
Drob sees young people develop their language and sense of rhythm, learn how to perform in front of others and gradually become more confident in their own abilities. Shared interests turn into friendships. Friendships become communities. This is where HipHop reveals its power as a space for education beyond the classroom.
It meets young people where they are. It speaks a language rooted in their realities and gives them room to experiment, take responsibility and understand that what they already bring with them has value.
From the Community to Berlin’s Rotes Rathaus
For the HipHop Ball, this work represents an essential part of the culture we want to make visible. Because institutional recognition cannot begin only once an artist has reached a major stage. It has to include the people, communities and places that make that journey possible in the first place.
On 14 November 2026, part of that journey will enter one of Berlin’s most symbolic institutions. Drob Dynamic will join the artist line up of the second HipHop Ball Berlin at the Rotes Rathaus. Young talents from the Berlin HipHop Akademie will also take the stage with their own performance in the World of HipHop hall. For one night, their journey will lead from Berlin’s youth centres into one of the city’s most institutional spaces. Not because their culture suddenly becomes more valuable once it enters those rooms. But because it deserves to be seen there, too.
