Vartan Bassil

Vartan Bassil is the founder and creative mind behind the Flying Steps, a globally acclaimed urban dance company from Berlin. What began in 1993 in Wedding as a hobby breakdance crew quickly evolved into a multi-award-winning dance group with international productions. Inspired by films like Beat Street, Vartan discovered his passion for breaking back in the 1980s – a hobby that became his life’s mission. With projects such as Flying Bach (2010), which fused Bach with breakdance, or Flying Illusion, he pushed creative boundaries and conquered more than 35 countries. Today, he directs the Flying Steps Academy, nurturing young talent and carrying breaking forward as a professional art form. With productions like Flying Mozart (2025), Vartan explores new intersections between classical music, choir, and urban dance. He is particularly fascinated by how movement and singing merge to create a unique, collective stage experience. Instead of boundaries, he emphasizes unity, diversity, and emotion. For Vartan, urban dance is more than art – it is an expression of freedom, passion, and hope.
